When you’re a celebrity it’s difficult to say anything about your relationship without getting intense backlash from the public.
And almost no other high-profile couple knows this better than Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco.
Whether they’re being flamed by Justin Bieber fans who can’t let the ‘Jelena’ dreams go, or internet trolls who have a lot to say about Benny’s appearance, the duo are constantly under public scrutiny.
And a recent tidbit about the beginnings of their relationship only seemed to upset the public even more.
The couple appeared on the Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware podcast to promote their new joint album I Said I Love You First.
Benny then opened up to share how Selena would always show up for dates early – extremely early.
‘Selena’s so insane that when we first started going out on dates, she was so obsessed with being on time,’ Benny said.
‘She used to pull up to my house, minimum 20 minutes early, maybe 30 minutes early, and she would wait outside.’
How did Benny know this? He admitted that he had a camera that would capture a street view, and he could see her car pull up ahead of time.
Selena chimed in to say that they had never shared the story with the media before – and while it sounded funny in the present, the behavior was due to anxiety.
She explained that she was so nervous to see him that she’d just sit in her car.
‘I was nervous that I really liked him and I wanted to get there and, like, maybe call a friend to pump me up or do my makeup again or something,’ she said on the podcast.
Selena even went on to say that her nerves were so bad she got a rash the first time her and Benny kissed.
‘I’d been alone for about five years, with the exception of a few shitty dates here and there, but never felt that way,’ Selena admitted.
‘And I was a little embarrassed.’
And while the couple shared this info with the mindset that it was a silly, cute thing that they could look back onto and laugh, the internet didn’t exactly feel the same way.
Many users on X, formerly Twitter, took issue with the story.
Some branded Selena herself a ‘stalker’ but most slammed Benny for sharing the information in the first place.
‘Why would you say something like this publicly about your SO? Very tasteless,’ one wrote.
‘He is so insecure to the point that in every interview he mentions at least one thing like that about her. He is desperately trying to prove himself and it’s sad honestly,’ another shared.
Someone else shared, in part: ‘That’s not a nice thing to say about someone you’re “allegedly in love with!’
Not all comments were negative, though.
Many came to the couple’s defense and argued that Selena’s behavior wasn’t odd – in fact, they felt it was relatable.
‘The way this is worded is so unnecessary,’ one shared.
‘Give me one girl who wasn’t ever once so excited about a date that they got ready too early, and then got nervous because they were so early??
‘Give me a break. Desperate is not the word for it my dude.’
Some even said they’d be ‘lucky’ to find a partner that was that excited to see them before a date.
