On Thursday she found out that she’s the highest-grossing actress of all time at the U.S. box office.
But Scarlett Johansson’s reaction to the news from Box Office Mojo was somewhat mixed.
‘It is kind of disappointing, actually, to be the only woman in this category, that was a little bit of a surprise to me,’ she told Extra TV.
But she also conceded: ‘It’s exciting to be the only woman in the category.’
The 31-year-old was speaking at the Gene Siskel Film Center’s annual gala in Chicago where she received the Renaissance Award on Thursday.
She came in 10th place with a $3.3 billion gross from 37 movies, thanks in great part to her role as the Black Widow in Marvel’s The Avengers.
The male actors ahead of her, in order of highest gross, were: Harrison Ford, Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hanks, Robert Downey Jr., Eddie Murphy, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Michael Caine.
Scarlett’s Avengers co-stars, Jackson and Downey Jr., both got their rankings due to starring in the blockbuster that raked in $1.1 billion worldwide.
The next highest grossing female actress was Cameron Diaz at No. 19 with $3.03 billion from 34 films.
Scarlett, who looked elegant in a light blue Oscar de la Renta dress at the gala, joked that she’s still waiting for Box Office Mojo to mail her ‘a T-shirt, or a pin or a hat’ paying tribute to her achievement.
Meanwhile, she also dished on the difficulties of being a working mother in Hollywood, saying: ‘If somebody has the magic recipe for making it easy, let me know… working moms two thumbs up.’
Scarlett shares 22-month-old daughter Rose with her French husband, Romain Dauriac, the owner of an independent advertising agency.
She smiled as she dished: ‘It’s my absolute greatest joy to change dirty diapers’ although Rose hates it.
‘I usually try to have something on hand to be distracting, a toy, a song, never works by the way, my daughter still hates it, she hates it.’
