“I didn’t want to get sued”: Keanu Reeves Only Did a “Disaster” Movie as His Friend Forged His Signature

Keanu Reeves, known for his action roles, has also dipped his toe in the horror genre.

Keanu Reeves is mostly known for his action roles, having led not one but two very successful action franchises The Matrix and John Wick, appealing to viewers by seamlessly combining the vulnerable and emotional sides of his characters with their fierce action sequences.

However, time and again, Reeves has also tried to evoke positive reactions from his fans by dipping his toe in the world of the horror genre. This stint has spelled mixed fortunes for the 59-year-old, with Constantine earning him both financial and critical success, and The Watcher putting him through a disastrous experience – all because of a forged signature.

Why Keanu Reeves Agreed to Do a Movie Despite Not Liking Its Script

The Joe Charbanic-directed movie saw Keanu Reeves portray David Allen Griffin – a serial killer who tends to study his female victims for several weeks before administering a long, torturous death. David also enjoys playing games with a former FBI agent by sending him pictures of his victims.

The review of The Watcher scared off moviegoers more than the movie itself, and the Reeves starrer bombed at the box office with a disappointing collection of $47.2 million.

By the late 90s, The Matrix and Speed star was already one of the most sought-after actors in the industry, as such many were left puzzled by his decision to accept a role in such an underwhelming story in 2000. Turns out, Reeves was tricked into his role and didn’t want to risk getting sued after a stupid antic from his friend. The 59-year-old told The Calgary Sun (via FarOut Magazine):

“I never found the script interesting, but a friend of mine forged my signature on the agreement. I couldn’t prove he did, and I didn’t want to get sued, so I had no other choice but to do the film.”

Such is his impression of The Watcher that when talking about his horror movie Knock Knock with IndieWire in 2014, Reeves stated: “It was a disaster. I hate that movie. It’s terrible. It’s a disaster.”

Incidentally, Knock Knock, which also starred Ana de Armas, garnered even worse reactions and underlined perhaps its best for Reeves to make the most of his reputation as the superstar of the action genre.

What Keanu Reeves Said About Potentially Collaborating With Fellow Action Superstar Tom Cruise

Reeves returned to the big screen earlier this year with John Wick: Chapter 4 and showed he’s still as fit as ever and capable of leaving his on-screen adversaries stunned and viewers in awe with his hand-to-hand combat skills. The blockbuster movie grossed $440.1 million at the box office.

Tom Cruise is known for his death-defying stunts.

The only other Hollywood star who is showing no signs of aging is Tom Cruise. The 61-year-old reprised his role of IMF agent Ethan Hunt to great effect in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One this summer.

Fans of action movies will undoubtedly love to see the two giants of the genre collaborate, akin to Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the old days. During the screening of the fourth installment of John Wick, ExtraTV asked Reeves about a possible team-up with Cruise.

“I don’t know, maybe we can be side by side with a common goal,” replied Reeves.

Considering the figures the former assassin and the IMF agent have garnered separately in the last decade, it won’t be far-fetched to suggest they might challenge the Avengers at the box office should they ever decide to join hands.
