Harley-Davidson Street 500 Custom: A Stylish Transformation of the LAMS-Approved Ride – Is All Blacked-Out Except for the Seat and Grips

The Harley-Davidson Street 500 is far from the most thrilling machine produced by the legendary American manufacturer. However, it holds a unique distinction as the only Harley model eligible for the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) in Australia, making it an ideal choice for riders looking to experience the iconic Harley brand. This article explores the journey of a passionate rider, Paul, who transformed his 2018 Harley-Davidson Street 500 into a stylish and unique custom bike. Collaborating with Ellaspede of Brisbane, Queensland, Paul’s vision came to life, resulting in a remarkable makeover that not only enhances the bike’s aesthetics but also its performance.

The Vision: Paul’s desire for a custom makeover led him to Ellaspede, a renowned custom motorcycle shop in Brisbane. The Ellaspede team eagerly embraced the challenge of turning Paul’s vision into a reality. Their canvas was a 2018 Harley-Davidson Street 500, a machine known more for its accessibility than its head-turning appeal. The transformation began with a focus on refining the bike’s rear-end proportions. A shortened subframe set the stage for a sporty tail section, paired with a bespoke brown leather saddle that exudes elegance. LED turn signals from Posh adorn the flanks of the tail, and a new taillight, sourced from a different Harley model, adds a distinctive touch.

Clean Rear Aesthetics: Ellaspede was committed to achieving a clean and uncluttered rear end. They installed a swingarm-mounted license plate bracket, illuminated by a Koso light, ensuring compliance with regulations even after dark. While the original forks remained, the factory shocks were replaced with 12-inch Progressive Suspension units, lowering the ride height by approximately an inch. These modifications not only enhance the bike’s stance but also its handling and performance.

Cockpit Upgrades: The front section of the original fuel tank was elevated, drawing attention to the removal of the bike’s front fairing. This reveal exposes a stylish headlight that was thoughtfully retained. LED blinkers, matching those at the rear, flank the headlight. The cockpit received significant aftermarket enhancements, including an LSL handlebar perched on two-inch risers. The handlebar features underslung bar-end mirrors from Motogadget and brown Biltwell grips. Forward-mounted foot pegs were added from Ellaspede’s proprietary catalog, catering to Paul’s taller stature and providing the desired legroom.

Finishing Touches: While the V-twin engine remained untouched, Ellaspede concluded the transformation by capping the exhaust system with a premium Vance & Hines muffler. The chosen color scheme is a striking metallic flake finish, presenting a bold and eye-catching appearance. Notably, the original Harley tank badges were preserved, paying homage to the bike’s roots.

Conclusion: The custom transformation of the Harley-Davidson Street 500 by Paul and Ellaspede is a testament to the creative possibilities within the custom motorcycle world. What began as an accessible LAMS-approved Harley model evolved into a head-turning, stylish, and unique ride. The modifications not only enhance the bike’s aesthetics but also its performance and functionality. This custom Street 500 serves as an inspiration for those seeking to make their mark on an affordable and learner-friendly Harley, proving that even an entry-level model can be transformed into a true custom masterpiece.
